LumaBeat turns a room full of phones into one synchronised light show. If something is not working, most of it is covered below — and if it is not, write to us and a human will reply.

Getting a show running

  1. Open LumaBeat on the phone that will run the show and tap Start party.
  2. Read the photosensitivity warning and tap I understand.
  3. Your phone shows a QR code. Everyone else scans it with their camera and joins from their browser — no app to install.
  4. Place the phones around the room, screens facing out. Then start the show.

Common problems

The flashlight isn't firing on a phone

The torch needs camera permission. On iPhone, open Settings › LumaBeat and make sure Camera is allowed. A phone will also stop using its flash on purpose when it is below 20% battery or getting too warm — that is the safety governor doing its job, not a fault. Plug it in, let it cool, and it will rejoin.

Guests can't join / the QR code doesn't work

Everyone needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network, and that network needs a working internet connection so the phones can reach the relay. Guest phones should scan the code with the normal camera app and open the link in Safari or Chrome. If the code has been on screen for a long time, the room may have expired — rooms last 24 hours; start a new one.

The lights aren't following the music

The host phone listens to the room through its microphone, so it needs microphone permission (Settings › LumaBeat › Microphone) and needs to be somewhere it can actually hear the music — not in a pocket, not right next to a rattling speaker grille. If the room is too loud or too quiet to read reliably, you can tap the beat yourself or set a tempo by hand. If a DJ on the same network is running Ableton Link, LumaBeat can lock to their tempo grid instead.

The phones are out of sync

LumaBeat keeps phones aligned by measuring the clock offset to the relay and scheduling every cue ahead of time. Congested Wi-Fi is the usual cause of drift. Move the phones closer to the router, or reduce how many other devices are streaming at the same time.

A phone is getting hot

Driving the camera flash and a full-brightness screen makes phones warm; this is expected. LumaBeat backs off the flash automatically as a phone heats up and stops using it entirely if it gets too hot. Give phones air, keep them off soft furnishings and out of direct sun, and take cases off if they run hot.

I don't want flashing lights

Open Settings in the app and turn on Reduce flashing. That phone will render soft, non-flashing effects for the whole show. The host can also black out every phone in the room instantly at any time.

Cost

What does it cost?

Nothing. Hosting and joining are both free: unlimited parties with up to 32 phones in the room, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no account.

Reporting a problem

Email support@zerolotus.com. It helps enormously if you include your device model and iOS version, roughly when it happened, and how many phones were in the room.

Privacy and terms

LumaBeat has no accounts and no advertising. The app sends anonymous usage analytics and crash reports so we can see what breaks; nothing you say or play ever leaves your phone. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what the app and relay do and do not handle, and the Terms of Use for the agreement covering use of the app.
